About Joanne
During my trainee ship I worked at Verdugo Mental Hospital working with adults with issues ranging from
depression, anxiety, addiction, grief, mood disorder, life transitions and relational problems. I became a grief
support group facilitator for widows and widowers. My experience as a facilitator help me appreciate the resiliency
and strength people have and they just need to be given the reinforcement to identify their capabilities.
During my internship I worked in a private practice under supervision working mainly with couples, premarital
counseling and adolescents ranging from issues of anxiety, depression, loss, life transitions, to name a few. While
at the private practice I volunteered as a Crisis Counselor with the American Red Cross to work at a shelter in
Louisiana after the tragedy of hurricane Katrina. Again, I gained a greater appreciation for the human spirit. While
in private practice I discovered my connection and passion helping teens. This is when I began working at
Hathaway-Sycamores Children and Family Services at their Outpatient Clinic in Pacoima, California. At
Hathaway-Sycamores I mainly worked with children and their families (ages 3-18) from different socioeconomic,
cultural, and ethnic backgrounds to overcome all aspects of psychological, developmental, and behavioral
difficulties, such as those dealing with depression, anxiety, mood, anger, trauma, loss, impulse control problems,
ADHA and other learning disabilities.
My areas of therapeutic focus are couples counseling, premarital counseling, adolescent issues, loss and grief,
individual and personal growth therapy/coaching and TV production consulting. My theoretical approach is eclectic,
deriving from several theories such as relational, psychodynamic, object relations, humanistic, solution focus,
cognitive-behavioral, and multi-cultural, depending on the client's individual needs. I have built a reputation with my
clients as an empathetic yet candid, no-nonsense therapist who believes in using a direct approach soliciting them
to gain awareness of patterns and areas of disconnection . I am bi-lingual in Spanish. I also worked part-time at
Woodbury University as a therapist for students and staff in their counseling department.

I earned my master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Pacific Oaks College.
Prior to my masters I spent several years working as a television producer,
graduating from Pasadena City College and UCLA. During this
period, after experiencing the loss of my husband in a car accident,
I realized my life lacked deeper meaning and purpose. I decided to
return to college and obtained my masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy.I
had often been told while I was a producer that I missed my calling as a therapist
because of my natural born ability to empathize with people and to allow my curiosity
to help people seek solutions. I decided it was never too late and returned to school.
My life's journey and professional training have shaped the kind of therapist I am.
